Type Locality and Naming

SW Algeria. The type locality and type section in Kreb ed Douro anticline where it is about 200m thick (Wendt et al., 2008). Named after the sandstone facies (“Grès).

Synonym: Grès de Kreb ed Douro Fm; Kreb ed Douro Sandstone; Kreb ed Douro Fm

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is about 0–220m thick, and consists of cyclic (shallowing up) shale-siltstone-sandstone alternations with cross-bedding and poor brachiopod faunas in the sandstone members. The formation is thickest in the central and northern Ahnet where it attains 220 m at Tirechchoumine, 160 m at Jebel Berga, and 150 m at Jebel Mouima (Wendt et al., 2008; Perron et al., 2018).

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It conformably overlies the Lower Tirechoumine Fm (or the Iridets Fm in the Mouydir Basin.)

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the Upper Tirechoumine Fm.
